How to Prep Your Lawnmower for the Spring

Prepare your lawnmower for the spring

While it’s still feeling a bit cold in February in Pennsylvania, Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on Groundhog Day 2024, meaning an early spring is on the way! This is a great time to think about the upcoming spring homeowner tasks that will be coming up soon. If you mow your own lawn, consider scheduling your lawnmower for service, or do it yourself so you are ready for the first spring cut!

For our DIY fans out there, we’ve listed a few steps for you to follow to prepare your lawnmower for mowing season.
1. Clean the mower: Remove any debris, grass clippings, and dirt from the mower deck, blades, and air filters. Use a brush or compressed air to clean hard-to-reach areas.
2. Check the oil: Ensure the oil level is correct and replace the oil if it looks dirty or has been in the mower for a long time. Refer to the owner's manual for the specific type of oil recommended for your mower.
3. Inspect the spark plug: Check the spark plug for signs of wear or damage. Replace it if necessary to ensure proper starting and performance.
4. Sharpen the blades: Sharp blades result in a cleaner cut and healthier grass. If the blades are dull or damaged, sharpen or replace them before the mowing season begins.
5. Check the air filter: Clean or replace the air filter to ensure optimal engine performance. A dirty air filter can reduce efficiency and potentially damage the engine.
6. Inspect the fuel system: Check for any leaks in the fuel tank, fuel lines, or connections. Ensure the fuel is fresh and not contaminated with water or debris.
7. Adjust the cutting height: Set the cutting height of the mower to your desired level. Different grass types and seasons may require different cutting heights for optimal results.
8. Test the mower: Start the mower and let it run for a few minutes to ensure it is running smoothly. Check for any unusual noises, vibrations, or issues that may need attention.

By following these steps to prepare your lawnmower for mowing season, you can ensure smooth operation, efficient cutting, and a well-maintained lawn throughout the season. Check out our short video on prepping your lawnmower.
